The first thing low cloud takes is the view. The second is your sense of distance.

A summit that looked close can feel as though it has moved. A broad path fades into wet grass. The slope beneath your feet becomes more convincing than the compass in your hand, even when it is leading you the wrong way.

This is why poor visibility deserves more respect than it often gets. You do not need darkness, heavy rain or a storm to become disorientated. A quiet layer of hill fog can turn a straightforward route into a navigation exercise within minutes.

That does not mean every cloudy day belongs in the valley. It means the day needs a different plan.

Read the cloud forecast, not just the rain forecast

A dry symbol on a weather app tells you almost nothing about the view from the tops. It can be rain-free in the valley while summits and high ridges remain inside cloud for most of the day.

Use the Met Office mountain forecast and look specifically at the cloud base, visibility and chance of cloud-free summits. Compare the expected cloud level with the height of your route. If the cloud base is forecast at 500 metres and your route spends hours above 700 metres, plan on navigating without distant landmarks rather than hoping for occasional breaks.

Check wind too. Low cloud by itself makes route-finding harder. Add strong wind, cold or persistent rain and simple tasks such as reading a map, adjusting clothing and keeping a group together take more time and concentration.

The question is not only, “Will it rain?” It is, “What will I still be able to see?”

Choose a route that still works when the view disappears

Some routes are far easier to follow in poor visibility than others.

A clear path following a defined ridge, wall or broad valley gives you features that can be identified even when the horizon has gone. A pathless plateau, complex network of trods or summit bordered by steep ground leaves much less room for error.

Before setting off, study the route as if every photograph had been taken against a blank grey background. Look for:

  • steep slopes, crags and gullies close to the line;
  • broad or featureless sections where paths may be difficult to distinguish;
  • walls, streams, ridges and other features that can help confirm your position;
  • junctions that will be easy to miss;
  • lower-level alternatives and sensible points to turn back.

Be careful with descriptions such as “follow the obvious path”. It was obvious to the writer when they could see it. Paths split, fade and sometimes continue confidently in the wrong direction.

If the route depends on seeing a distant summit, a cairn or the next section of ridge, it needs a stronger navigation plan.

Know where you are before the cloud arrives

The easiest time to navigate is while you still have something to work with.

If cloud is dropping towards the route, stop before it reaches you. Identify your current position on the map, set the map to the ground and note the next reliable feature. Do not walk on until every landmark has disappeared and then try to reconstruct the last twenty minutes from memory.

Keep checking your position throughout the day. Match bends in the path, changes in slope, stream crossings, walls and contour shapes to the map as you pass them. These are often called tick features because each one confirms that you are still moving through the route you planned.

The habit matters more than the terminology. You want a chain of confirmed positions, not one hopeful check at the summit.

Break the route into short, manageable legs

In good visibility, you can often move towards a landmark several kilometres away. In cloud, navigation becomes more reliable when the route is divided into shorter legs between features you can recognise.

For each leg, know four things:

  1. the direction you need to travel;
  2. the distance to the next feature;
  3. whether you should be climbing, descending or contouring;
  4. what you expect to meet when the leg is complete.

That final point is important. A compass bearing gives direction, but it does not tell you when to stop. Distance, time and the shape of the ground provide the other parts of the answer.

Learn how to estimate distance using pacing and timing before you need those skills in poor visibility. Practise on familiar ground where mistakes have no serious consequences. The middle of an unfamiliar plateau is not the place to discover that you have never measured a 300-metre navigation leg.

Carry a map and compass — and know how to use them

A navigation app is useful. It can show your location quickly, record your route and help confirm a grid reference. It is not a complete plan on its own.

Phones can run out of battery, become difficult to use with cold wet hands or suffer damage. A location dot also cannot decide whether the ground ahead is safe. Carry a detailed map and a proper baseplate compass, keep both accessible and learn how to take and follow a bearing before heading into serious terrain.

Mountaineering Scotland's navigation guidance makes the key point: map, compass and electronic tools all work best when you check your position regularly rather than waiting until you are unsure.

If you use your phone, download the map for offline use, start with a full battery and carry a power bank. Keep the phone protected from rain and avoid leaving the screen running all day. Use technology as part of the system, not as permission to stop paying attention.

Do not trust the path more than the map

A path underfoot feels reassuring in cloud. That is exactly why it can be dangerous.

The line may be an animal track, an erosion scar or a popular route to somewhere you do not want to go. Even a well-used path can split near a summit or drift away from the route marked on your map.

Keep comparing the ground with what should be happening. Is the slope falling away on the expected side? Are you still gaining height? Should a wall, stream or change in gradient have appeared by now?

If the answers stop matching, deal with the disagreement early. Ten uncertain steps are easier to undo than ten uncertain minutes.

Keep the group together

Poor visibility can separate people surprisingly quickly. A gap that feels normal on a clear path may be enough for the person behind to miss a turn or lose sight of the group entirely.

Close the spacing before entering cloud. Stop at junctions and make sure everyone has taken the same line. The strongest navigator should not disappear ahead while the least experienced person tries to keep up.

Talk through decisions rather than carrying them silently. Another person may have noticed a wall, a change in slope or a path junction that you missed. Shared information is useful; a scattered group is another emergency.

If you are unsure, stop moving

The instinct to keep walking is powerful. It creates the feeling that you are solving the problem. In poor visibility, it may only increase the area in which you could be.

Stop somewhere safe and get out of the wind if you can. Note the time. Think back to the last place you were certain of your position and gather the information around you: the direction and angle of the slope, nearby water, walls, paths, altitude and the ground you have just crossed.

Check the map, compass and electronic location together. If it is safe and practical, retracing your steps to the last confirmed position may be better than pressing on. Do not simply descend because “down must reach the valley”. The slope below could lead towards crags, broken ground or a different valley entirely.

If you cannot establish your position or move safely, protect the group from the weather and call for help. In the UK, dial 999 or 112, ask for the police and then Mountain Rescue. Give your location, the condition of the group and as much detail as you can. Mountain Rescue England and Wales advises staying put after calling unless the rescue team tells you otherwise or remaining where you are creates an immediate danger.

Turn around before the decision becomes difficult

There is no single visibility distance at which every walk becomes unsafe. Fifty metres on a broad familiar path is not the same as fifty metres beside steep ground on an unfamiliar mountain.

The decision depends on the terrain, the weather around the cloud, the group's navigation ability, remaining daylight and how much margin the route gives you. If the conditions demand skills you do not have, move to the lower option while you still know exactly where you are.

Turning back early usually feels conservative. Turning back late rarely does.

Dress for time spent standing still

Low cloud is damp, and navigation slows the day down. You may spend longer standing with a map, checking bearings or regrouping while wind pulls heat from wet clothing.

Carry a waterproof shell even when rain is not the main forecast. Add a warm layer that can go on during stops, plus gloves and a hat. Keep the insulation and emergency kit dry inside the pack. Hiking in low cloud is not about marching into the grey and trusting that the path will continue. It is a deliberate process: read the mountain forecast, choose terrain with room for error, keep a running fix on your position and use direction, distance and ground shape together.

Practise those skills on easy days. Build the habit of checking where you are while the answer is still obvious. Then, when the summit disappears and the path fades into mist, the cloud changes the atmosphere without taking control of the day.

Endure more, fear less.
