Most people who get cold, wet, or miserable on a hill didn't bring the wrong kit. They wore it the wrong way. Layering sounds basic, and it is, but getting it right is the difference between a good day out and a long, shivering walk back to the car.
The idea is simple. Instead of one big jacket trying to do everything, you build up thin layers that each do one job, and you add or shed them as the day and the effort change. Three layers cover most of what the British hills throw at you.
The base layer
This sits against your skin, and its job is moisture, not warmth. When you're working hard,, you sweat, and sweat sitting on your skin is what makes you cold the moment you stop. A good base layer pulls that moisture away so it can evaporate.
The one rule worth remembering: avoid cotton. A cotton tee soaks up sweat, holds onto it, and stays wet for hours. Go for merino wool or a synthetic instead. Merino is hard to beat here, since it moves moisture, keeps insulating even when damp, and resists odour, which matters on anything longer than a day.
The mid layer
This is your insulation, the layer that traps warm air and keeps it close. A fleece or a light synthetic top usually does the job. In summer you might not wear it at all and just carry it. In colder months, you might want something thicker, or two thinner options you can mix.
The thing to aim for is flexibility. You want to be able to pull this on at a windy summit and strip it off ten minutes into a climb, rather than being stuck with one heavy fleece that's either too much or not enough.
The shell
Your outer layer is your defence against wind and rain, and on the hills. A waterproof shell keeps the weather out while letting your sweat escape, so you stay dry from both directions.
This is where the numbers matter, and where cheap kit lets you down. A shell needs to genuinely hold out sustained rain, not just shrug off a shower, and it needs to breathe well enough that you're not soaked in your own sweat by the top.
Putting it together
The skill isn't owning the layers, it's managing them. Start a touch cooler than feels comfortable, because you'll warm up fast once you're moving. Stop and add a layer before you get cold at a summit or a rest, not after. Strip one off before you're dripping on a climb.
The aim is to stay as dry and even-temperatured as you can, all day.
