There is a point in the life of most waterproof jackets when the rain stops forming beads and starts spreading into dark patches across the shoulders. The fabric feels heavier. The inside becomes clammy. It is easy to assume the membrane has failed and the jacket is finished.
Often, it is simply dirty.
Mud, sweat, skin oils, smoke and traces of ordinary detergent all interfere with the durable water-repellent finish on the face fabric. Once that outer layer starts soaking up water, the jacket can feel cold and breathe less effectively even while the membrane underneath is still keeping rain out.
The answer is not to avoid washing it. The answer is to wash it properly, then restore the water repellency only when cleaning alone is no longer enough.

What does “wetting out” mean?
A waterproof shell normally has two separate lines of defence. The membrane or coating is the barrier that stops rain passing through the garment. On the outside, a durable water-repellent treatment, usually shortened to DWR, encourages water to bead and roll away from the face fabric.

When the DWR becomes contaminated or worn, the outer fabric begins absorbing water. That is wetting out. It does not automatically mean the membrane is leaking, but it still matters: a saturated face fabric becomes heavier, feels colder and makes it harder for moisture vapour to escape.
If the jacket beads when it is new but develops broad dark patches later, start with a proper wash before reaching for a reproofing treatment.
Before you wash the jacket
1. Read the care label
This instruction overrides every generic guide, including this one. Waterproof garments use different membranes, seam tapes, face fabrics and adhesives. The safe temperature, spin speed and drying method depend on how the particular jacket was built.

2. Remove ordinary detergent residue from the machine
Standard laundry detergent and fabric conditioner can leave residues that reduce water beading. Clean the detergent drawer and remove any visible build-up. If the machine has recently carried a fabric-softener-heavy load, run an empty rinse cycle first.
3. Prepare the garment
- Empty the pockets and remove anything detachable if the care label instructs you to.
- Close the main zip and all pocket zips.
- Fasten hook-and-loop cuffs so they cannot catch on the fabric.
- Release tension from hood and hem drawcords.
- Brush away loose mud rather than grinding it into the machine.
How to wash a waterproof jacket
Step 1: Use a technical cleaner
Choose a cleaner made for waterproof and breathable clothing. Follow its dosage instructions rather than guessing. Do not add fabric conditioner, stain remover or bleach unless the garment manufacturer specifically permits it.
For the Fellguard, use a technical cleaner rather than ordinary detergent. That protects the C0, PFC-free DWR and avoids leaving surfactants behind on the face fabric.
Step 2: Select the correct wash
Follow the care label for temperature and cycle. For the Fellguard, that means 30°C on a gentle cycle. Wash heavily soiled technical garments separately from ordinary laundry and avoid cramming the drum; the jacket needs room to move and rinse clean.
Step 3: Rinse thoroughly
Cleaner left in the fabric can work against the finish you are trying to restore. If suds remain or the care label calls for it, run an additional rinse without adding anything else.
Step 4: Dry it according to the label
Line drying is the safest default when the available care instructions do not authorise heat. Some manufacturers allow a short, low-heat tumble dry to reactivate DWR, and some reproofing products work without heat. These methods are not interchangeable.
How to tell whether the jacket needs reproofing
Let the clean jacket dry, then sprinkle or spray clean water over the shoulders and upper sleeves. If droplets gather and roll away, the DWR is still working. No extra treatment is needed.
If water spreads into the face fabric and forms dark patches soon after landing, the jacket is still wetting out. At that point, reproofing is reasonable.
Reproofing restores water repellency to the outer fabric. It does not repair a torn membrane, lifting seam tape, worn coating or damaged zip. Those problems need a repair or a warranty assessment, not another bottle of treatment.
How to reproof a waterproof jacket
- Start with a clean jacket. Applying proofing over dirt and oil traps contamination and produces an uneven finish.
- Choose a product made for breathable waterproof clothing. Spray-on treatments concentrate the product on the face fabric; wash-in treatments are convenient but coat every surface they reach.
- Apply the treatment exactly as its maker directs. Many are used on a damp garment, but the required dosage and method vary.
- Cover the high-wear areas evenly. Pay particular attention to the shoulders, hood, upper back and cuffs. Wipe away obvious excess before it dries.
- Dry or cure the treatment correctly. Follow both the garment label and product instructions. If either one rules out heat, do not use it.
Spray-on or wash-in?
A spray-on treatment gives you more control. You can target the outer face without coating the inside, which is useful for jackets with wicking liners or where the manufacturer recommends exterior application.
A wash-in treatment is faster and distributes the product widely, but it is not automatically suitable for every garment. Check the jacket label and the proofing product before choosing. The best option is the one approved for the construction you own, not the one that sounds most powerful.
The mistakes that shorten a waterproof jacket’s life
- Using ordinary detergent or fabric conditioner when the manufacturer rules it out.
- Reproofing a dirty jacket instead of cleaning it first.
- Assuming more product will give more protection.
- Applying high heat without checking the garment label.
- Scrubbing hard across seam tape, printed logos or laminated areas.
- Putting the jacket away damp, where odour and mildew can develop.
- Treating wetting out as proof that the waterproof membrane has failed.
How often should you wash and reproof it?
There is no useful fixed calendar. A jacket worn through sweaty winter climbs will need cleaning sooner than one carried in a pack and worn twice a year. Wash it when the collar and cuffs look dirty, after sustained sweaty use, when it has absorbed smoke or sunscreen, or when water stops beading as it once did.
Reproof less often. Clean and test first. If the jacket still wets out after washing and drying correctly, then add a suitable DWR treatment. Modern PFAS-free finishes may need more regular care than older fluorinated treatments, which makes observation more useful than an annual reminder.
Is the jacket leaking, or are you sweating?
Moisture inside a shell does not always arrive through the fabric. On a hard climb, sweat can build faster than even a breathable membrane can move it. Broad dampness across the back, chest and arms, especially after walking uphill with every vent closed, points towards condensation.
A concentrated wet patch beneath damaged fabric, a seam or a failed zip deserves closer inspection. So does seam tape that is visibly lifting or peeling. Clean the garment, let it dry fully and inspect it in good light before deciding the membrane has failed.
